YOUR NEXT SMALL WINS

By the end, you’ll be able to…

  • Construct a compile-time dimensioned Matrix<T, Rows, Cols> class using C++20 Concepts and NTTPs
  • Implement cache-friendly row-major 2D matrix multiplication with transposed loop access
  • Overload arithmetic operators (+, -, *, ==) and format formatted stream printing with zero heap allocations

01Project Architecture & Requirements

In this systems project, you will engineer Matrix<T, Rows, Cols>—a high-performance, generic linear algebra engine designed for game physics, graphics shaders, and machine learning neural tensor computations.

Your implementation must fulfill the following technical specifications:

1. Generic & Constrained: Constrain element type T using C++20 Concepts to ensure only arithmetic types (std::is_arithmetic_v<T>) can instantiate matrices.

2. Zero-Allocation Stack Memory: Represent matrix elements in a contiguous 1D row-major array of size Rows * Cols directly inside the class footprint using non-type template parameters (NTTP).

3. Compile-Time Dimension Verification: In matrix multiplication Matrix<T, R1, C1> * Matrix<T, R2, C2>, enforce compile-time verification that C1 == R2 via template signature matching, failing compilation if dimensions mismatch!

4. Cache-Friendly Loop Tiling: Optimize matrix multiplication loops to maximize CPU L1 data cache hits.

02Cache Locality & The i-k-j Loop Ordering

In classic textbook matrix multiplication, three nested loops iterate as i, j, k. In row-major memory, however, accessing rhs(k, j) inside the innermost k loop strides across columns, jumping Rows * sizeof(T) bytes on every single iteration! This causes devastating L1 CPU cache misses on every memory load.

By reordering the loops to i, k, j (hoisting temp = lhs(i, k)), the innermost loop iterates across index j: result(i, j) += temp * rhs(k, j).

Notice that both result(i, j) and rhs(k, j) now advance contiguously along sequential memory addresses in the row! This enables the hardware CPU prefetcher to keep data hot in L1 cache and allows the compiler's auto-vectorizer to emit AVX-512 SIMD vector instructions.

03Compile-Time Dimension Verification

Notice the template signature for operator*:

template <size_t OutCols> Matrix<T, Rows, OutCols> operator*(const Matrix<T, Cols, OutCols>& rhs) const;

By declaring the right-hand matrix with Rows = Cols, the C++ compiler guarantees that multiplying a 3x4 matrix by a 5x2 matrix FAILS to compile immediately. Dimension mismatch errors are trapped at compile time, with zero runtime assertion checks.

04Production Architecture & Engineering Trade-Offs

Building an industrial-grade production project requires rigorous engineering beyond passing unit test suites. Real-world systems must handle partial network failures, malformed input streams, concurrency race conditions, and graceful shutdown sequences without data corruption or memory leaks.

When developing this project, ensure that domain boundaries are clearly defined, errors are modeled with typed exceptions or sealed result types rather than generic runtime errors, and performance critical paths are profiled to verify zero unnecessary heap allocations and predictable latency profiles.

Furthermore, real-world deployments mandate structured observability: instrument latency percentiles (p50, p95, p99) using modern telemetry, ensure strict memory bounds, and validate that SSO transitions seamlessly to heap storage without pointer aliasing.

LET IT CLICK

The ideas worth keeping.

  • Non-type template parameters (NTTP) enable zero-allocation stack matrices with compile-time dimension checks.
  • i-k-j loop ordering aligns with row-major cache lines, dramatically reducing memory stalls.
  • C++20 Concepts ensure only valid arithmetic types can instantiate numerical computation engines.

Explain how Matrix<double, 2, 3> m1; Matrix<double, 4, 5> m2; m1 * m2; triggers a compile-time error rather than a runtime crash.

// operator* requires the right-hand operand to have type Matrix<T, Cols, OutCols>.// For m1, Cols = 3. Therefore, the parameter requires a matrix with exactly 3 rows.// Because m2 has 4 rows, template type deduction fails to match the parameter signature.// The compiler rejects the expression at compile time with a 'no matching operator*' error.

Look at the template parameters of operator*.
